On a scale of 1-10, how concerned are you about AI taking over legal jobs in the future?

AI will increase the productivity of legal personnel but it will not replace jobs per se. One legal assistant will be able to handle the workload equivalent of two and half of today’s legal assistants. An attorney will be able to manage 1.5 times the case load they do now, but AI will not just replace the role of a legal assistant or attorney. The process will be gradual just as it was with things like computers and online research so it won’t be very painful. We are not going to wake up tomorrow and terminate 1/3 of the attorneys because AI is making work more efficient.

I mean, my firm is heavily invested in AI, and we definitely don’t need as much staff, as the staff is able to do the job of 2x people. A lot of the clerical stuff, including research, is all done by AI at this point. However, I don’t see AI going to court and orally arguing a motion anytime soon.

Really nice to see people very hopeful.

My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.

I work in insurance. I was working for an Allstate agent and was fired the day after my grandmothers funeral for being “unenthusiastic in our morning meeting”. Now I’m having anxiety searching for a job. I don’t think I want to sell anymore yet every single recruiter I interview with says I should, that I have a “salesperson mentality”. I’m burnt out. Has anyone else felt this way? How did handle it? Is there a different career path I can take or am I destined to sell insurance forever?
