I’m all for people who openly want to discuss how much they make. However, I’m just not comfortable saying or even asking. Is there an appropriate way to test the waters to see if somebody else wants to share? Making rounds as a new person to everybody else and asking is probably not the best way.
Right, especially being the new person. But I guess they might have come from an environment where everyone did that before.
I get that it feels awkward, especially from someone new, but pay transparency only feels wrong because we've been conditioned to think it is. The only people who benefit from keeping pay secret are the ones signing the checks. You don't have to share if you don't want to, but I wouldn't judge her too harshly for asking.

I’m no trying to judge her because I get it why she wants to know but it’s a bit weird to me. I just don’t feel that comfortable tell someone I barely know how much I make. I agree that we are conditioned to not ask our peers how much we make.

I have had a job where one of my colleague had this habit and it made me uncomfortable every time when she asked me about my compensation. These types of people are everywhere.

I know we may all be curious about what our peers are making up but it’s so inappropriate to ask because a lot of people are not comfortable when talking about salaries. I just wish she would read the room and not ask.
