I haven’t done this but I’ve heavily considered doing it for huge career jumps only. I wouldn’t do it for a small step up or lateral. As a former consultant that traveled weekly to clients, hotels, crummy food, expense reports etc … flying once a week to my own apartment > staying there 3 nights > and flying home seemed way better as long as … again it’s a major career upgrade, I’m making way more to cover the apartment and flights, and i realize it has a 2-3 year shelf life.
My spouse and kids were 100% on board. That is the only way this works and doesn’t result in resentment or worse.
Do you have an offer ? If not, you are thinking way ahead. They are pre IPO companies that has 1000s applying to one role. Think about this when you get even first call
Not sure what “second round” means. If it is HM at Anthropic , then you should ask this question to them directly. That usually follows a loop - you should confirm onsite requirements before that or take home study for non tech roles. OpenAI is a bit more relaxed, but their second round is most liking some kind of case study.
For any recruiter screens, the same question will need to be asked
If you are willing to spend on airfare and lodging every week, they won’t care. If you are asking them to pay for it then you should bring it up asap. Other than that it’s good to mention that you will be in another location for some part of the week as it may have tax implications. Anthropic is more likely to provide an remote exception, OpenAI won’t

The biggest jump in my career required a relocation, and it's been a great ride.
On the flip side of that coin, we now love where we live, and in month one of unemployment following a RIF back in December, we were not going to move. Here we are 6 months later our beloved home is on yhe market, and I would gladly move across the country to get back to work.
All that aside, my gut says that an Anthropic or OpenAI would be worth the move in the long-term.
What level in your career are you? What is your next career goal?
How long is the travel each week? I think it’s good to have an idea of when this will end too. At what point are they moving or when are you going to give up the commute? What’s your end goal with jumping into this career shift
