I’m a midlevel in Houston and quite happy with it, but opinions differ. If you’re coming from Latham/V&E you’ll have a similar or slightly better quality of work, but free market staffing, free food, and no billable minimum for bonus. If you’re coming from any other firm here, you will be materially improving quality of work (and presumably those other benefits but the comparison varies by firm).

If you care about making partner, it’s of course a crapshoot at any firm but we make a ton of equity partners here relative to the industry. It’s really hard to know about chances of laterals vs homegrown because the office is young enough that true homegrown associates are not quite old enough to be up (I think next year they will be), so all the partners so far have been laterals (though maybe they lateraled as juniors).

Is making NEP very early a good thing or bad thing for you? Opinions differ. To me, it’s a good thing. But that’s one of the big obvious differences here too.

Houston office is generally great. You mentioned trying to get more day-time work. It's a toss up here. When you're busy, you're busy all day. But there are still plenty of instances for me where work comes in after 5/6 pm when the partners finally had a chance to address it and push it down. Some folks are good about trying not to unnecessarily blow up your weekends, but you'll notice that Partners generally try to accommodate client's short deadlines whenever possible, which results in a lot of Friday afternoon/evening requests that need to go to the client first thing Monday morning (i.e, to the Partners by Saturday night/Sunday morning). Free market staffing (i.e., saying no to matters or people you don't want) may be harder for you in a "niche" group as there are fewer people, so you'll usually get forced staffed. General M&A has the greatest autonomy in terms of the "free market" system since it's the largest practice group. Still a sweatshop, but a good place to be.

A5 nailed it - I've had few instances where I've tried to a tell an NSP "no" but they've come back with "you're not on track to bill 300 this month, so you're not busy enough to say no" - even though the K&E recruiting spiel loves to wax poetic on associates' ability to say no to partners who are difficult/unpleasant to work with... (TLDR: if other people have said no before you, you can always get forced-staffed).

Recent mid level lateral in New York. I’m generally happy here! Been getting a steady stream of work, partners are very responsive and provide great feedback/what I need to do my job. Expectations are very high but not anything unreasonable. Happy to answer more in DM.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.
