Dreading my first year review. I don’t think I’ve done anything to make myself fireable but who knows! I think I have a lot to improve on though. What’s the mindset you take with you into reviews?

If there's anything you needed to know someone would have told you. Reviews are an annoying set piece so people can feel like a company with a formal fair process blah blah. Reject the hype.

When they say "how do you think your year went" thats your cue to filibuster the next half hour.

like

What are good responses for how the year went? Any good filibuster material?

Maybe talk about matters you particularly liked, what you’d like to do more of, what you’d like to focus on and learn more of

You might want to bring any emails or notes from people giving you compliments. I always bring a handful of emails from partners singing my praises in case they try to pull some BS or lowball my raise.

Act eager and receptive to learn. Say things Ike, I'm excited to deepen my practice and work with more people!

What is one of the most frustrating parts of being a scientist or researcher?

I'll tell you what it is: referencing!

You have to do so much of it, and it's so annoying. You have to cite your sources, but there are so many different formats for citations! And then sometimes you don't even know how to cite something, and how are you supposed to know that unless you ask someone who knows? And even then, they might not be sure whether it should be an in-text citation or a footnote…

I can’t stand people that brag about how busy they are or how late they stayed up doing X. They may think they’re just complaining, but the sanctimonious tone is unbearable. I promise you, no one is impressed. You are the problem with this industry.

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed.
