These responses are hilarious acting incredulous at this question. Maybe it’s because I didn’t grow up as privileged as some but I never saw much monogrammed clothing until I got to big law
I think the question is more than fine and acceptable. I get it, nobody had monogrammed anything where I grew up.
People's responses to why someone does it are what's obnoxious to me.
Nothing more lol than when our first year came in rocking these
why lol?
I think the incredulity and condescension is my answer. Thank you and good night.
FWIW I noticed this for the first time recently too and I also think it’s weird and a bit fuddy duddy

I’m with you OP. Monogramming is a totally douchey thing to do
Monograms are a normal thing to get. Are they new to you?
i was not! but my school was sororatastic and most people had stuff monogrammed with the chapter name but not their name - maybe regional? a bunch of my roommates junior/ senior year were in sororities and their stuff still wasn’t personally monogrammed
To the people just explaining to me what initials on clothing are…okay, yes. Monogram. Again—why?

Lmao I must admit I also don’t get it but I’m a woman and now I’m curious (not in a condescending way, I’m genuinely ignorant)
I always thought it’s one of the tackiest things to do

So when they’re blackout drunk they can be identified in some manner.
The real flex is monogramming your attorney registration number. Like a prisoner.
It’s very old school (read WASP). Same thing with blue shirts with a white collar.

It’s called a monogram.

Honestly, it came free when I purchased custom fit shirts...Not even throwing shade, when you get your shirts tailored and don't buy off the rack, they usually throw that in for free, so why not.
I also like my name/initials.
Same reason women monogram their phone cases, overnight bags, robes… its cute lol don’t overthink it.

One of the partners I’m tight with has these on every shirt. One time I finally asked him why, and he said no particular reason, he just gets them bc they’re free where he buys his shirts lol. I thought that was a pretty good answer

I think part of it comes from boys'schools where laundry was done.
It's cutural. Southern and fratty east coast vibes. I'm from mississippi and EVERYTHING in my grandparents house was monagramed. Her bath towels (of every size) had her initials and his had his. Napkins, napkin wrings, spoon rest in the kitchen, little monagramed bags to put in other bigger monagramed bags. It's just a thing rich people in the south and east do. It continues with sorrorities and fraternities having their letters on everything. The cycle continues until your parents move you to Colorado and you realize you don't have to imprint your ownership on everything lol.
Partner walked into a meeting yesterday with a white collared blue shirt with monogrammed cuffs. Felt like I was facing the final boss

Did he ask for those TPS reports?

I think it’s tacky.
It’s an old money thing before you could flex with electronics
