Question I have a new hr manager (a little over 2 months) and I had mentioned about going to my psychiatrist and that I went back on an antidepressant. I mentioned this bc I was taking off one afternoon for counseling. I had a f/u apt and she asked me what the dr said and if she changed my meds or anything. The more I think about it the more I think she crossed the line. I just said I had another follow up scheduled. Is she legally able to ask this? Should I talk to the VP of HR?

I imagine she might have been asking on a personal level, not a professional one. In the future, I would recommend not bringing up your personal psychiatric care if you need time off. You could just say "doctors appointment" or even just "appointment." If she does anything with that information, then sure, you could bring it up with the VP. But she might've just been following up out of concern for your well-being.

She def does not care about my wellbeing. I have a very serious medical condition that can literally kill me and when I had to leave while doing orientation and go to my office instead of asking if I was ok she asked how long it took me to “get over it” and when would I finish orientation.

I think you opened the door. She shouldn’t have gotten so detailed, but you volunteered some pretty specific information. I would be floored if I was the HR person fielding your complaint in this situation.

I’m sorry but I never said I was going to file a complaint. I was asking what others opinions were. So explain what you mean about being floored if you were fielding my complaint…

I think you may both be a bit at fault here. You had mentioned the antidepressants in the first place which may have made your HR manager feel like it was a topic open for discussion or connection. Hopefully it's just as benign as that or even a sign that she just wants to get to know you as a person.

However, just because you brought it up doesn't make it okay for her to probe, even out of concern. I don't think it's bad enough to get your VP involved at the point from just one question.

I would document the incident somewhere in case it turns out later that the HR manager does try to do something with the information. I'd also be more careful with your personal information in the future. Dr. Appointment is more than specific enough to request time off.

You can also approach the HR manager and let her know that although you had mentioned specifics of your appointment, you thought about it and are not comfortable discussing medical specifics with her going forward and will keep any future requests more vague yourself as well.

She may be proactively formulating an Accomodation for disability request. You might consider formalizing a request for regular time off for therapy appointments as a disability accommodation. I think that would protect you under ADA.

I agree on another comment above if she might have been asking on a personal level rather than a professional level as in my opinion you did sound quite open with telling her about your appointment details, but that’s all down to each individuals.
I would bring it up if management didn’t start to care about your well-being and you feel like your being frowned upon for it, as that is definatly not on. Sounds a bit of a tricky one but I hope you’re okay!

She may have been thinking about the need for an ADA accommodation. Mental illness is covered under the ADA. You volunteered the information; she was following up.

Republicans... in hindsight, do you think it was a political miscalculation to have Pence on the ticket? Seems to me it would have been advantageous to have someone firmly in the Trump camp - like Alex Jones - as his VP to galvanize the base and put more daylight between the Trump ticket and Biden’s mainline political position. Thoughts?
