Oof, this sounds so hard. See if there's a trusted partner or peer who can coach you up on "how the group does things" so that it sounds more like you're learning that group's playbook instead of how to do the job generally. There are hopefully forms, redlines, precedent docs that you can study up when things are slow. That's too bad the firm gave you a class year bump instead of a cut bc partners might write off your time if your rate is high and they think you're taking too long on stuff, but hopefully you can learn quickly and they just chalk it up to getting acclimated to the client and partner preferences, etc.
Anecdotally, when I was a second year I was asked by a partner to mentor a 5th year who the partner had basically no confidence in. It was super awkward for me and I kinda wish the senior associate had just talked to me first for advice instead of the partner basically asking me to check his work constantly. But at least the partner tried to get the senior up to speed in his own way instead of blacklisting until he was proven capable?
Ah, if you're the only associate then the partners take what they can get and should be highly incentivized to train you up so that you work out and they don't have to fill the role again. Try to frame all your questions as trying to do things exactly how the partner/client wants so hopefully they feel invested in getting you up to par.
They also might not have a good feel for what is normal for your level of experience (maybe other folks left for lack of training/development or overly high expectations), so try not to take any notes about experience gaps personally!
Thank you!!!!!!! The firm doesn’t have good forms since they don’t do too much of the type of work in my practice area. No other senior associate as well that is proficient in the area. I’m the associate for it and then there are the partners.
I didn’t even ask for the class year. Just came with the offer and then I didn’t want to back track to make them doubt their decision to extend and offer.
