Dear Fishes, I am in a conundrum currently. I have two offers. One from Deloitte USI (17.5 LPA fixed, 1.75 LPA variable and 1.5 L joining bonus). The other is from Infosys (25 LPA CTC. Permanent WFH. Negotiation is still on for this.)
Could you please be so kind as to help me decide which one to choose?
Thanks in advance,
Fellow Perplexed Fish.

ABAPers having less scope is actually good, because SAP is actually pushing for advanced ABAP via RAP and very little improvements on CAP. There's no reason to get involved in the rat race. How many do you know who are extremely good at Java, Python or JS, and actually good at understanding business processes? Most of them only know development and wouldn't be able to survive in a business facing role. But take ABAP Developers for example, you should know the business or you're done for when you've over 5 YOE. Personally, I feel really chill because you don't have as much competition compared to other developers and also get to learn the business.
An ABAPer is also a programmer like java and javaScript developers but the plus point that we have over these developers are that we are involved in business processes more than any other programming field but that does not mean that java and javaScript developers are not associated with any business processes. What I understood is there are many 3rd party applications which a business use to just post data into SAP and these applications are build on Java and javaScript stack. Now here comes the picture of RAP and CAP developers. As we know SAP has a new platform now and that is BTP where we can build any application with the help of Java , javaScript and ABAP runtime which is totally a game changer. Now all those 3rd party applications can be build in BTP itself so a set of new opportunities are coming in SAP domain which we as an ABAPer and UI5 developers can get benefit in terms of learning and growth in salary. We should now start to think like developers who can understand and implement business processes in any language whether it is ABAP, java or javaScript in SAP. I think this is very much necessary to think in that way and utilise the business knowledge that we have in SAP.
Don't compare ABAP to Java. ABAP is restricted to SAP. Java can be deployed anywhere. ABAP let's you focus more on business problems than lower level system or db related problems.
I find ABAP puts me in a sweet spot between technical and business. With SAP you are an enterprise engineer/consultant and not just a developer.
And don't underestimate ABAP. When I was new I also thought that ABAP is less glamorous compared to Java, Python, etc. But over 5 years I have seen that SAP has done a lot of stuff with ABAP. Do you know you can also build a complete API backend in SAP using ABAP.
ABAP is the perfect language for writing business applications as a lot of low level code is eliminated. In Java when you read from database, you have to code the db connections, define an output structure and then read the results. In ABAP, you don't need to write db connections statements, you can simply use the same structure as db table instead of creating from scratch (not available in Java). You only need to write select statement.
Also, it is easier to excel in ABAP than in Java,Python, etc. In other domains the competition is high. In ABAP there is a shortage of Good engineers or programmers (because everyone wants to become SDE with Java, Python, etc).
That being said, I was also a Java/Python freak when I was new. But overtime understood all the work done by SAP using ABAP. And we must not underestimate it.
Wooaahh.. thanks for the boost!!
Because of its straight fwd logics in ABAP, Java developers hardly respect us and i got offended and demotivated... Nevertheless, as u say, we understand business better. :)
Thanks man !!
I have joined immediately your company
Yes even I feel same ABAPERS are not getting growth as compared to open-source developers no matter how good abaper is.
ABAP is application specific language, limited to SAP only. Whereas java and other open source language have huge potential to do anything in any field related to sofware engineering. Even mostly you will limited to service based companies with sap abap skill.
With sap abap scope is not much.
Yes that is good field
But in java competition high
Dsa very tough
I would suggest to be functional atleast. Leave ABAP...as soon as possible. All those giving you gyan have max 5 years of experience.
Later on your will realize what I said but it will be very difficult to leave. Better leave now and save yourself...
State reasons like others giving gyaan.
