Should we put our emotions and personal biases aside? Of course. But like you said we’re human and sometimes that’s easier said than done.
Great question - it’s a balance, I always needed to check myself when this type of situation came up. If I was passing them on, I’d usually say to the hiring manager “I think this person is a great culture fit, but see what you think as you assess for technical skills”.
Normally we were pretty aligned, and the candidate either failed on technical skills or the manager would give me feedback on something they were missing. But it was a good litmus test.
It also depends, when I was in a start up culture fit was like 50% of the requirements and we built a kick ass culture. But corporate was much more merit or skills, and the person could be a jerk - so org culture and hiring managers will also affect “fit”.
Overall emotions are good, but not when unchecked.
It's business ......not personal. It truly is that simple.
