I know this sounds crazy...but I actually don't think a 4 day week is a good idea. As nice as it would be for the teachers/staff, it would create a lot of childcare problems unless other professions decided to do that too. I also think right now with so many children getting reacclimated to in person school after COVID, removing them again for a day isn't moving in the right direction. Just my two cents
I don't think it'd be a good idea either unless other professions did it first. There is already a lack of respect for educators because we have holidays and summers off. Going to 4 days would add to that sentiment.
I would like to add that the day called Monday would then be called Tuesday with the same back-to-work feel and bad sentiment so I don't think it would matter which day as long as the 3 off are in a row and include the weekend to see others.
Honestly, this country is so backwards in terms are for education. We are nowhere near the top 10 in the world in terms of education anymore that going to a four day week would be honestly insane. That being said my school essentially has a four-day week where on Wednesday the students I’ll do community service weather on campus or off as well as DE&I programming. So for faculty and staff who are not involved in that programming on Wednesday it’s a planning day and faculty meetings day. So it’s essentially kind of like a four-day week but we do need to be there and be around on that day but we’re not teaching classes on that day. Kids are doing something as well. It’s also I work at a boarding school so Wednesdays a day or the afternoons are free or for the students so that they’re able to travel further away because our schools are far away for sports games.
It tends to destroy standardized test scores in math. You don’t have as many days for topics, and it’s hard to chunk multiple topics into the longer time slot and give the the practice and explanations required for proficiency on those topics.
I also agree with what others have said. Unless other professions go toward it or unless more childcare options become available, I think a lot of families throughout the community would suffer.
Some of my students need to be babysat even in high school and I hate to think and know in some cases what they are doing in the streets on non-school days. Then again, some are helping to support their families so they are missing a day here and there anyway.
