I mean I don't think the lawsuit does much. I think the end of the contract in Feb 2023 will be what helps us low allocated plebs.
But I don't know if I even care anymore. The rat race and prices are not worth it so I'll just enjoy my scotch and Irish whiskey going forward.
That’s what all distributors do - it’s how they move product.
The reason you see a bunch of bottles on a Costco shelf is because Costco is buying so much volume they get more favorable terms, and they probably are picking up crap other stuff to make the deal, but you don’t see it because you are ignoring the case of random vodka on some other Costco shelf. The other part about Costco is that they simply don’t have the staff to be messing around with secondary-like or single-bottle pricing. They buy palates of product and place it on shelves at or just under MSRP and when it’s gone it’s gone. That’s true for everything they sell. The only place they have variability in pricing is fresh foods.
If you want to get rid of distributors - great. That means changing your state’s liquor laws, so start there. However, that will lead to the death of independent liquor stores. No producers have the teams necessary to deal with ever store independently. They’ll favor big deals with national chains. Just like Home Depot killed local hardware stores, and why grocery stores are consolidating into a small handful of national changes.
Only the biggest producers will be able to do direct to consumer sales (again, state liquor laws), and I promise you the rare stuff will disappear behind club memberships and obscene pricing.
