So I have an uncle who works for The Boston Consulting Group, and he was never comfortable offering me a referral but I found out he will be referring one of his friend's sons for a role I would be perfect for. I'm frustrated and want to confront my uncle and insist he helps me get the job instead of this person he doesn't really know. My dad said he would help pressure my uncle to help me with the referral if I wanted but I'm worried we would be overstepping our bounds. But -cont in comments

Depends. If the person being referred is more qualified than you are, I think it makes sense to refer him instead. He is staking his name when referring you after all. Is there anything that may make him think that you're not a good fit for the job?

If you are perfect for the role, why not get someone else to refer you? He may feel like it's nepotism or worry about setting a precedent. And what happens if you ask him and he tells you something you didn't want to hear?
