So if you’re not a career consultant and have strategy background…but your “home” industry (higher ed) is a huge mess…what career options are you prepping in case you are invited to leave your firm? My coach said everyone she knows is ramping up “back burner” options but I am having trouble considering what those might be.

Go independent. Play the fear hard and sell work about managing through the next 4 years and developing strategies around it.

A1 and EY1 nailed it. I also moved from Academia (W/PhD) to Consulting. As a back up I am building my brand. Gathering material for book and Public speaking gigs. You can make some good money in public speaking.

Industries in trouble have greater needs for good strategy work - if you can help them come up with and think through options to respond to the challenges. Industries that have been stable (glacial) often have the most trouble adapting to sudden change - and so need the help.

Had an interview today, for RN OnCall position. This is an extremely difficult position, but I bring not only a preference to work the hours they need but the experience and credentials to qualify for the upper range of the salary (RN, MSN, CHPN, 5 years hospice experience). I asked for the range and he gave the range then immediately stated that I would qualify for mid range. My goal is to find a similar position to the one I’m working now and add 20-30% to my income, the high range would meet
