I do. I’ve found explaining is actually pretty easy. For most of my Manhattan / Brooklyn superiors, Jersey is total terra incognita. For all they know I take a camel to work, and transfer to a bobsled at Secaucus. So whenever I get in late, or want to leave early, I just shrug and say “f’ing trains” and that’s it. They don’t want to know anything more than that.
I’ve commuted from jersey for two decades. Somehow I always managed to beat my partner into the office. But it was understandable since my partner had to commute all the way from manhattan.
If you’re at a company where you need to justify showin up to work at 9:15 instead of 9 sometimes, then you need to find a new job
I wouldn’t write a post about a missing 15 minutes. Recent weeks have caused me to be at least an hour late almost every day. (And no there is not an earlier train option) As someone with anxiety, this causes me so much stress even though my company is understanding, I feel it still reflects poorly when my resident NY counterparts are on time, waiting for me.
I've taken it almost my entire career and it does get quite challenging to explain the delays after a while. What I did was start taking 1-2 trains/buses earlier. If there was an issue, I would still make it to work "on time" and if there's no issue, I would get breakfast/go shopping in the morning/take care of errands like post office, etc... I made the extra time work for me. I am very anxious when it comes to stuff like that too and I found that's the only thing that helped across the board. What's an extra train/bus (I've done both) if it relieves my stress and doesnt make me look bad at work
It’s getting tougher every day.
Half my NJ office is commuting into NYC today. We just smile and nod wearily. It's well documented that this shit is going on, so even when I was based in NY I would accommodate what I could and then over communicate that I was late. Unfortunately, it doesn't help NJs overall reputation amongst my City-based colleagues.
Even if it comes to coming in even earlier to try and miss a crush during regular commute times, you can still get screwed. There’s no good answer. If I felt my company didn’t get it, (they do because so many of us are in the same boat at the company) I would screen grab the NJT mobile apps that show the trains canceled or delayed and send those as proof
I sent my boss NYT articles.
