Jones Day over there looking at them freed up contracts
What contracts? Covington is not a federal contractor…

I don't really have a problem with this game over a pro bono client they took on as a political stunt.
Different story if it was a paying client.
(If this was reddit here is when I get 50 downvotes, but on this place I'll probably catch a 72 hour ban)
@A4, your argument, even if sound, which it isn’t, is meaningless and doesn’t apply here. Jack Smith is not a pro bono client of Covington. Covington is gifting the legal services to Smith.
Actions have consequences, whether the consequences are fair or not.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Same would be happening if Jones Day represented some clients pro bono that had interests at odds with the Biden/Harris admin.
Let’s not act surprised. This is routine in the world of politics.
Love how A4 was obliterated into silence. Get out of here with that BS and normalizing Trump’s corruption. It’s not normal nor will it ever be.
Seems pretty awful to me. Another example of Trump acting unpresidential. However, and I can’t believe I am saying this, the left (who I begrudgingly still identify as a member of) really took the gloves off against trump for YEARS now. You can’t be a hypocrite for years on ethical issues and then clutch pearls when he does something that he probably has the legal authority to do (though distasteful). The consequence of him doing this, if it really deters Covington from being able to rep smith, strike me as similar to attorneys speaking to all the best expert witnesses about a litigation dispute in order to conflict them out. That happens all the time. Some savy litigants do the same to conflict out good attorneys in their area. I’m sure different legal principles apply, but ethically, I don’t think it is much worse.

I don’t entirely disagree, but ethically it is worse because he is the president of the United States weaponizing the federal government. That is orders of magnitude worse than a lawyer in some case (probably also unethically) conflicting out expert witnesses. Yes, it’s the same sort of tactic. But it is different given the weight here. It is one of the most powerful people in the world ignoring the tenets of our system of government and acting like a dictator - using his office to punish who he sees as political enemies. Blatant misuse of the government like that weakens our reputation in the world. So, I do think it is different.
