I admittedly haven’t had that issue in the past few years but when it has happened, I’ve found that the best approach was to micromanage up, with lots of updates so they feel really close to it. This person is crazy insecure and more than proving you can do the job you need to prove you’re aligned to them. When they feel you get them, they should relax a little. It’s their insecurity, not your performance.
This is the way.
From my insight, from just a small handful of terrible people over 20 years in the industry, insecurity drove all of this small groups terrible and diverse challenges. Some of these people could have been sociopaths, but most were just terribly insecure and jockeying for position. Bringing them close and absorbing some of the blows is how to survive them. (Or quit).
Yes and it’s the worst - most leaders have a hard time giving up control - they have to be all in the weeds
Yep, all the time. It’s what happens when you have a young person who has never managed people before, and they’re insecure in their own abilities. Now crank that up a few notches if you have a better portfolio than they do like I’ve experienced in the past. I hate to say it, but if you want to keep the job, you might just need to really get out what that person wants and give them that exactly with some stuff on the side as bonus after they’ve warmed up to you, which will help you get further traction.
I’ve noticed the exact same thing One put in this position. I think the other thing I would add is try to figure out a way to sneak your idea in to make them think it was their own they came up with. It’s tricky to balance that, but if you can pull it off, they will start to gain trust in you as “their” ideas gain more traction
Yup! I have the man-splaining boss who is the epitome of why people send their daughters to all-girl schools. Can’t have a bit of autonomy around him.
Yes and I left on day 366
Our industry continues to suffer from insecure managers (their not leaders), and we have a terrible manage-up expectation in culture across the board. When business or economic challenges arise, it gets x10 worst
Yes. It sucks. Some people are bad managers and you don't know until you are there. I left a high paying SVP job to get away from a really bad leader after 5 months. Frustrating and not something I want to have to explain but I knew we could not work together. Lesson learned, ask questions about management style and how you will work together in interviews. Ultimately the clicks that already existed overpowered my ability to establish my own ways based on lots of experience.
