What jobs are currently paying 85k?
Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

That does seem unusual to be be asked that so early. Perhaps the best approach is polite deflection, say something to the effect that your salary expectations would depend on the responsibilities of the position, what the total compensation package might look like, and the possibility of growth and advancement in the position. That postpones the salary discussion plus it's entirely sensible as an answer.
Nice way to word the response in a respectful way. Cheers.
I would just be completely honest. Give them the very lowest amount you're willing to take, but still negotiate when you get the offer. And don't sell yourself short, either. Because they will probably go with the minimum amount you list. I personally think this is a rather tacky question, but I'm also seeing it more frequently these days.
You ask for the salary range and inform them that while you have a minimum, the salary you expect is dependent on the responsibilities associated with a given role.
Like Consultant 1 above alludes, I actually have written this:
Not everyone views the compensation package as part of their salary. I do and would need to know what my contribution to it would be and related medical expenses/deductibles.
Not everyone gives thought to the growth and knowledge that can be acquired through a role like this. I do and look forward to hearing more about the role and any potential opportunities for growth.
With these in mind and travel time and expenses, I would respectfully request that we table this discussion until the interview process is further established.
Note to self: I did get the job when I used this….got to bet back to it. Lol
I recently had a recruiter reach out and I saw that the base salary on the job only went to a certain amount. I asked if there was flex for the right candidate and gave him a realistic total figure of what I’d need to move. I did not hear back.
