Looking good on paper can be important, but a lot of people may look good but also look the same. It's always a competition, and the people who stand out and land a job are probably the ones who can project a professional personality that clicks in some way. Plus, someone can do really well in an interview, and another candidate may do a little bit better. Not to make light of it too much, but it's like those races in the Olympics where someone wins by a hundredth of a second.
I have been trying to figure this out myself lately. I have been getting rejections the day after I apply, which makes it seem like nobody is actually looking at my resume. I am trying to figure out what I can do to make my resume stand out more.
In my experience the ones where you get rejected that soon after applying (assuming you legitimately met the requirements provided in the description) are usually the instances where they determined someone either (1) had a leg up due to internal connections/references or (2) they were so over-qualified that it didn’t make sense to interview anyone else. Definitely not something to take personally.
