Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach. 1 Timothy 3:2
Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah. Solomon met his downfall marrying many wives.
Different cultures back then had different standards, and it doesn't mean God didn't work with people, but the picture of marriage is of Christ and the Church. All other passages in the New Testament regarding marriage are primarily about being equally yoked, and no divorce. Our picture for marriage is not Jacob or Solomon, but Christ and the Church. There is only one husband for one wife. And it also says here "above reproach". Even though its specifically citing for elders, this is what the bible says is "above reproach", a man of one wife.
People often cherry pick things in the Bible to justify what they want to do. You can't just say thar Jacob had two wives and ignore the rest of Adam and Eve, Ruth and Boaz, most importantly -- Christ and the Church.
^great point - Christ and the church is the greater and true marriage. Models a 1 to 1 betrothal
God’s design for marriage is shown Genesis 2:22-25. One man, one woman. Ethical discussions of marriage in Scripture always assume this fact (Mttw 19:1-12, 1 Cor 7, Eph 5:25-33, 1 Peter 3:7).
(The plurality of the addressed audience may serve to confuse, but you’ll notice that the discussion always boil down to a singular reference for the audiences spouse)
The Bible never really condones this practice. It simply describes it.
To add to that. It’s amazing how many people don’t understand that the Old Testament is for the most part, except for a few exceptions, a series of books describing people going against what God laws. That’s the entire premise of the Old Testament and why Jesus had to die for us, because we couldn’t follow God’s laws.
Even for example the concept of War. People believe God is completely OK with justified war to do good or in God’s name. Look at David even after he was completely forgiven for his sins and becomes one of God’s favorites who the Messiah would eventually come from. When David with pure intentions wanted to build a temple for God, God told him no and said that David had shed too much blood in the sight of the Lord in the different wars he’d fought in to be the one to build it. Just because it’s in The Bible or even certain people do it, it doesn’t mean God approves of it.
The thought wears me out ? I mean .. you get NO alone time cause your juggling many woman mandates..
I'll keep my girl
Interesting topic. I don’t see anywhere in scripture God told us to marry more than one wife or condone it. Just because they did it doesnt make it right for everyone though. While God didnt condemn them or call it sin in the Old Testament we definitely see cases where polygamy made life more complicated. It was common for the wealthy and kings to practice polygamy.
Seems like Matthew 5:27-28 is disregarded when people claim they are in polygamist relationships purely for support AND not for sex. But I’m sure the person truly pushing for polygamy wants someone who is attractive... or else they’d get a baby sitter and maid like everyone else

Have they read the New Testament? Better yet, have they read the Old Testament in its context?
The book of Solomon is a good reference
