There are very few “essentials” of the Christian faith, but they are essential:
1). Belief in the triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), i.e., one God in three persons, the Trinity. This is supported in the Old and New Testaments and includes embracing the deity of Jesus Christ.
2). Understanding that we are fallen - we are sinners - in need of salvation. Salvation is through faith in Christ alone; it is not through works (good deeds). It is only by God’s grace.
3). Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected; he paid the penalty for our sins (see point 2). He is victorious over sin and death and is alive, seated at the right hand of God the Father and interceding on our behalf. He is our Great High Priest (Hebrews 4). It is through him that we have access to God.
I believe there are both Protestants and Catholics that believe/embrace all of the above, they have placed their faith in Jesus and their lives have been transformed by the grace of God. I also believe that there are people who are Protestants and Catholics who have not truly placed their faith in Christ and are depending on works (doing good deeds - which are, in fact, very important but not essential) like going to church, being baptized, etc. Baptism is, after all, a command (Jesus said, “Repent and be baptized.”) We all also add non-essentials and can, at times, put too much emphasis on them.
Ultimately, we will each have to answer to God. No one can see into the heart of a person to understand their spiritual position except God.
But anyone who paints with a broad brush and categorizes people as described above by OP is not worth listening to. IMHO.
Well summarized PwC
There are those in both Protestant and Catholic churches that are saved and some who are not saved. Just as there were some in the Israeli nation before Christ that were a part of God’s elect through faith and some who weren’t
Agree completely with PwC1. There are always disagreements and divides about what denominations are “true” Christian denominations. Literally every cult begins with a misconception of who Christ is. As believers we should always make certain we know the essential doctrines of the Christian faith. In the nonessentials I am always reminded of Augustine’s most excellent quote:
Grew up Pentecostal basically and lean the other way as I get older. But salvation is not a group thing but an individual one. There are Matthew 7:21-23 people in every denomination.
Why dont they believe Catholics are Christians?
What I understood from some comments, its due to the difference in the way other Christians worship.
Some even said Catholics are pagans
