Dang I was planning a 6 month sabbatical and was hoping that would do something 😂
Genuinely curious, did you come back to the same basic work environment after the sabbatical? Or did you make changes to that environment and still feel burnt out? I’m considering the same thing but feel like I’d need permanent environmental change to return to in order to avoid burning out again.
The answer isn’t boundaries. It’s perceived value.
A few times a year it might be worth taking on something after hours when it’s worth it and meaningful. Otherwise being communicative enough based on the level of importance. Example receiving message at 5pm, “thanks I’ll take a look in the morning” rather than silence. And showing face to the right people unfortunately. You have to be communicative.
Show that the job is still important to you but in ways that work for you. Hard boundaries tend to make people look like they don’t care. That isn’t valued and you will get pushed out. Know how to make it work for you and them.
You don’t need to go from answering emails every night to strict off hours. Rather have the judgment to know when something is worth a little push. Nuance goes a long way.
I took off an eight week short-term disability and tried returning. Failed. Now starting a 6 month sabbatical next week. Let me know if you have any more words from the wise.
