I’m having a black tie optional wedding at an upscale hotel and I’m doing a school bus shuttle! It was a lot cheaper than the ~fancier~ shuttle options. I think my guests will just be thankful to have the transportation arranged for them and won’t care that it’s a school bus. My vote is to save that money and spend it on something more fun!
Same issue here and we went with school buses. School buses were so much cheaper. My wedding is in a more rural area and my planner also pointed out that the school bus drivers also know the area so much better and are less likely to get lost than the fancier shuttles (who are coming from outside the area). Not sure if this applies to you, but something to consider!
I love school buses personally, it's a cute idea and feels a lot more cozy/fun than a shuttle. I'd say go for it, especially if there's cost-savings involved. You can repurpose the shuttle price towards something else in the wedding!
What size/hours is that!! The price sounds insane. I got 40 person buses for $250/hour (nice party buses). How do you get to $7k? Maybe you need to shop around.
PS I’ve seen several fancy weddings using school buses. They’re actually really cute photo opps in my opinion. (Ie the cute yellow ones )
We’re having a big wedding so we need transportation for like 150 people - it’s nuts!
I was a guest at a wedding with a school bus shuttle and no complaints. It was also on a hot day with no AC. I was just happy to have transportation provided where I didn’t have to find a designated driver! There were no complaints from anyone
I don't think its tacky at all. I have had several friends do it and I actually thought it was really fun.
Thanks all! My biggest concern honestly is the heat. They don’t have AC and my wedding is mid afternoon in the middle of summer (think between 75 and 85 degrees). The ceremony is also outdoors, so I’m nervous about people sweating like crazy before they even show up and then being outside for another hour!
Thanks all! I agree I think they could be super cute just didn’t know if other people would think they’d take away from the formality of it - but sounds like the answer to that is a resounding no! I’m still torn on the heat issue but all these comments are very reassuring :)
Rising Star
How long will the drive be? It’s one thing to put up with heat for 10-15 mins. If it’s more like 30+ mins that could be challenging especially if people have been drinking (adds to dehydration) or you have a large number of older relatives. If it’s a longer drive, let people know the bus doesn’t have A/C so they can arrange their own transportation (or ensure their hair stays in place with all the windows open on the bus!).
Also would recommend there’s an air conditioned place for them to go upon arrival to cool off and freshen up. Ideally larger bathrooms. Regardless of the drive time, expect people to be sweaty - especially men in suits
Ohhh. That would be challenging then. What's the setup outside?
It sounds like you are providing a wonderful service for people so they don't have to worry about driving. I wouldn't put too much weight on the look of them, especially if it's a short ride.
Nope. I'd go for the much cheaper option. The guest wouldn't mind if you are in a rural area.
I think the guest would understand it. That way, they don't have to worry about their transportation.
It's not tacky at all. A 20-25 minute ride would be bearable for most of them. If you have an extra budget for the fans and bottles of water, that would be great.
Have you told them already that the bus doesn't have AC? You should do so if you haven't yet. That will allow them to prepare and consider the weather as well as the travel time.
