The bigger question is do we even need the SPR anymore. Especially when you look at the history of why it was built and its nominal impact on gas prices today. The SPR is no longer essential in its current form because the United States has become one of the world’s largest energy producers. Maintaining massive government oil stockpiles is expensive, distorts energy markets, and ties up taxpayer resources that could be invested in modern energy infrastructure, grid resilience, or deficit reduction. In today’s global and diversified energy market, private industry and domestic production capacity provide a more flexible and efficient buffer against supply disruptions than a decades-old emergency reserve system.
