We all hate bad work environments and managers. Do you do anything in particular to make sure that you’re not unintentionally creating a toxic environment? Or can you think of anything you wish was done at your workplace? I just want to ensure I’m not a part of the problem and, if I am, correct those behaviors asap.

I really appreciate this self-awareness in managers. I try to always communicate openly and give constructive feedback rather than letting frustration build up. I also make sure to listen and check in with my team regularly. If I notice something off, I address it quickly. I think creating a positive environment starts with everyone being proactive

Thank you. I think it’s important to think about these things as people leaders (while many truly don’t care about the impact they have on those they lead). I agree with your leadership style of open communication and regular check-ins. Allows team members to have agency as a part of the foundation of the team and not to be treated like task performers.

I never create a toxic work environment unintentionally. I’m very methodical.

You might be methodical on not creating a bad environment from your perspective, however, have you considered that others might have a different opinion of what a toxic work environment is?

It’s very simple… Just Be Nice. You will come across people you don’t like or don’t like you… just be nice. If someone requires more attention because they don’t understand it… just be nice. Take the time to explain to them. The hope is that others will see you and imitate this behavior. If not, speak out when you see the contrary happen. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

I agree that it’s always important to be nice, be understanding, actively listen, but since all people are different, one person might feel differently about a situation than another. I just want to make sure I’m a manager for all and not just a manager for people that think how I think.

Just the fact that you’re asking this says a lot. For me, the biggest thing is feeling heard without being shut down or dismissed. Small things like how feedback is given or checking in personally can really shift the vibe.

Thanks for sharing. I agree I’ve seen too many of my peers take out their anger and emotions on team members without actually hearing them out.

I do my best to not contribute to it especially with gossip. Spreading rumors and telling lies can create issues with coo workers and drag the community down even if everyone loves the company.

Some “gossip” can be good for team bonding, but you’re right toxic gossip is a problem.

I would say - make sure to be positive, and to trust. Think of your role as manager as protecting and building up your subordinates rather than looking for an excuse to criticize them. And don't overreact! It's just a job at the end of the day. A stressed leader will create a stressed team.

I’ve always tried to be very intentional in how I handle my stress. Some of my bosses have so much stress it bleeds pressure onto everyone around them. I appreciate your notes those are really crucial to building a great environment!
