Any advice on getting started in UX?

More important for UX designers than researchers.
What you really need is a few ways to demonstrate how you work and the impact you’ve made.
For me that is a case study presentation and that’s something you’ll likely need. I also wrote up a few projects using the STAR method and had those pdfs available. I haven’t found the need for a public portfolio. If I’m asked for a portfolio I say I have a case study I can walk them through if they would like to interview me.
I’ve submitted my portfolio in the past when I was looking at UX research positions. One of them asked me to go through my portfolio as a part of the interview, just outlining my process and thinking. But like the other person said, more for UX designers. But it’s a good way to track progress, especially if you have final screens or designs that show your thinking
