What do you think about us rarely travelling / working with our team in person / being at the client? Personally, I feel like a big part of the consulting experience is taken away from us…

I think it’s a huge benefit that we DON’T have to travel like other firms. It’s really not that great (90% of stories sound miserable. All it does is add even more hours to your day traveling, working on laptop in uncomfortable places, all to get to some crappy town and stay in a hotel, and worst of all never seeing your SO, kids and friends; it places huge strain on relationships). Plus, we’re largely a DD shop so there really isn’t much traveling unless going for final presentations (which hopefully comes back more but I think it’s the clients that prefer to do over zoom?). That said, I’d love to work more with in-person team and I think the firm will bring more of that back as situation improves (collocating and staffing with more same-office teams, for example).

Your network and soft skills are built strongly through your in-office colleagues and project work (many of whom will be seeds throughout the TMT ecosystem over time). Don’t discount that half of the equation. In terms of client-facing network and soft skills, given our DD heavy work, it’s going to be kind of tough anyway until you’ve worked with the same client repeatedly (and seems even tougher for A/Cs, even up to SCs to build anything resembling a “relationship” with the client IMO). It’s a fair question though and worth asking your CA more about. I imagine the Directors/Partners all have faced similar challenges, especially those who were raised in-house.

Altman has always been a low travel firm. That is why many people pick it over others. Sounds like you didn't do your research when considering what firm to join.

This has only been the case over the past 6 months - this will be back.

In our office we're pretty much always working in person

Which office is that?

I have an MHA and 4 years of management experience. I’m currently a manager, but seeking a director level position. Any advice for trying to temper my expectations? I feel like all director level positions have 5 years in the posting, but a lot of my peers with the same experience are already in director level positions. Are they just lucky? Am I jumping the gun? Do I just need to stick it out?
