As one of the last Boomers in the building, I try to tell the younger managers they can either be a "Bud" or a "Boss." They can't be both. Their staff needs discipline, leadership, and direction as much as military unit does. Just like you cannot let the inmates run the asylum, you cannot give employees free rein to do whatever they want to do. If you do, and they decide they don't want to do anything at all, then what? Avoid that unpleasant scenario by making it clear to them what they are expected to do and equally clear to them what will happen if they don't. So you don't get a Christmas card from them this year, so what?
I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle, per usual, when it comes to these sorts of things. Make it clear, through both word and deed, what you expect of your team. You don't have to be nasty about it. I like to have a 1:1 with new people so they know what I expect from them work-wise, but I also ask them questions about themselves, how they like to work, etc. so I can take that into consideration. It sets the tone, but doesn't keep me so far out of reach that they are afraid to come to me with issues.
Gen z are managers now? Wow I’m old.
I think we can teach them how to teach, delegate, lead, and hold people accountable - without being threatening.
I think the generation gap is as much about age than it is about generation. I think people under 30 or so are still just getting familiar with how to navigate and lead in the workplace.
I knew some Gen Xers who were very casual and acted like children while leading orgs especially during dot com (Tony Hseih for one, unfortunately he never grew up) While others were much more demanding (like Elon - but remember he also launched a company that made firethrowers)
Be you. Be consistent. Be fair. Everything else over complicates things and risks you coming off as inauthentic.
