I earned a business degree and more or less fell into HR. It wasn't intentional, but I think my personality has made it a natural fit since I'm both detail oriented and empathetic. The biggest challenge for me has always been trying to rise above it all and not get my feelings hurt. I hate that HR always gets the "bad guy" rep and wish more people would realize there isn't anything personal about what I have to do. I'm just doing my job, same as them.
This is very similar to my story. Fell into HR, but is a good fit for my temperament. In learning & development, I love seeing people learn and apply new skills. I love seeing organizations grow because their people grow. Others often look down on L&D and minimize the importance of so-called "soft skills".
I graduated with a degree in sociology and I didn't really know what I wanted to do. I knew I liked working with people and I'm very organized. I started applying for internships and landed an HR internship, and it's kind of been a natural progression ever since. If I hadn't gotten the internship, I honestly probably would be doing something completely different.
I came into my role as accounts Administrator and took on different roles until eventually I took over HR.
I kind of found myself doing hr work when I was an administrative manager for a small company that started to grow. There were less than 20 of us when I started so I basically built the hr department from the ground up.
