What is the average age at which people start an entry job in consulting in Europe? Is there such thing as ‘too young’?

I’m London based and started at 19 (meant to be 18 but covid froze hiring). Same as my flatmate in PWC. Apprenticeships are a wonderful thing!

It depends on what country in Europe you’re talking about.

In many countries such as Italy, Spain, Poland or Nordics it is very common to have masters hence people start their jobs when they’re 23/24.

Then UK has expensive degrees hence many people start their work right after bachelor which is around 21.

Second this, in countries were undergrad is 4 years (such as Spain) it is a bit less common to do masters. Still in some european countries you are expected to do placement year or internships after your studies so many people do not get their first “real” contract until even later…

It’s interesting to read everyone’s experiences. I guess there are big differences between countries due to the educational systems. I personally started at 22 and I noticed that people are often surprised by my age.

I also find that in my company (where French people typically spend longer in higher education) it is strange to start at 22 but I have noticed that even if you start “late” some people progress MUCH faster than others. So much so that it makes the starting age almost completely irrelevant and the focus is more on what you bring to the table than age on a piece of paper.

Started as Accenture analyst in S&C at 21 out of uni, and got promoted to consultant last year at 22. Although it’s not nice being the youngest in every meeting, people care about your work and not your age, which I think is great

not EU but for a non US perspective (Australia) I started at 19 (barely).

Started my typical german vocational training with 16 yo, so „graduated“ with 19.

Started at 21 but going back to school soon for a masters

For now yes, but I’m keeping an eye out for more quant-y opportunities as that’s what I’m interested in

I started out of uni (integrated masters) at 22 in London

Started at 24 in London, 1.5 years exp elsewhere but came in as a grad

No master’s just UG

Started at 25 in London, 2 masters and undergrad, previous work experience in sport

I did an apprenticeship then transitioned into consulting, I started at 17 with my consulting placement (and following role) starting at 20. I’m now 22

Started at 24 in UK. Had done masters and ~2.5 years industry experience. Was definitely useful to have a couple of years experience, though was still the youngest in my team when starting
