What part of the marketing world do you have to have only 4 hours of deep work a day, and the rest is lighter or is not busy with work? I always wanted to get out of being in the creative space where I had to write and make pitch decks all the time, and be on the side where I just get to oversee them. Now that I am here, I feel like the workload has just doubled or even tripled. How many of you feel like you have a rather relaxed work life?

I think it’s a myth that in-house roles are easy sailing. What improved for me since moving in-house is WLB - it’s very, very rare that I work overtime, the company does not expect or encourage overtime (unlike consulting firms and agencies). And I have more ownership so to a degree I can set my own pace of work (provided I still deliver in certain parameters).

Also, there is more time carved out for trainings (again unlike consulting firms/ agencies, where I was expected to make up that time in my free time as if being on a training is not also part of the job).

But I don’t have a lot of “light work” in-house, my days are still pretty dense. A lot of companies, mine included, are moving away from outsourcing everything to full service agencies. We outsource some elements, but we do a lot in-house too. And even when outsourcing, there is a lot of internal alignment and buy in required (which I don’t find to be light work, quite the opposite really, it can be fairly mind-bending having to navigate those politics and build the right report with stakeholders to keep things flowing without hurdles).

Would love to know if there is a magical place like the one you describe. I am a law firm marketer, a sole marketer whose job is to do marketing, comms, events, and business development for 40 attorneys. There is almost never any quiet time to strategize or do calm work unless it's after hours or on the weekend. Constant emails from the attorneys or their assistants with requests, from vendors trying to sell me something, or vendors with whom we work to coordinate the tasks and projects in progress. It's a constant flurry of activity which gets disrupted whenever a potential or current client requests a pitch or wants us to take part in an RFP process.

Wow didn't know how things were in the law firm world, and it's interesting to get a glimpse.
