Years ago, I felt I had to always look put together to be taken seriously. Now, I let my work speak for itself. I still enjoy getting ready when I want to, but it’s on my terms, not anyone else’s expectations.
Probably my favourite part of rising through the ranks in my career is feeling less pressure to look the part! I love that my work can speak for itself and I can be more comfortable.
I do my hair but it’s pretty simple - wavy and fine so I look like Bozo if I just wash & go, but a simple bun or twist takes under 5 minutes & looks professional all day. Or a wide fabric-covered hairband — just something that shows intention. My skin hates makeup but I do lipstick & mascara every day.
I also have a baby face and look 15-20 years younger than my age peers. If I go too casual I lose visual credibility for my role, which is senior & customer-facing. I like a little war paint. It depends a lot on your role & your internal/external clients. Other qualities are much more important ultimately.
I work remotely 80% of the time. I do a lot of double duty products. Tinted sunscreen is my favorite. I have wavy hair so I selectively curl a few strands. Minimal makeup unless I’m presenting or onsite somewhere.
if i shower i already did a favour.
100% remote though
