My base loc is Bengaluru, but currently I am not mandatorily required to work from office, and have been working from home since I joined Deloitte in July. Should I talk to my manager and go back to my hometown Kolkata and work from there? Staying in PG all day and working from here is not quite feasible for me. Suggest pls. Deloitte India

I’ve had jobs previously where a large portion of the total compensation was comprised of the bonus (sometimes 50%+). The bonus is never guaranteed and there are always lots of variables to consider (how the firm performed, how you performed, utilization metrics, politics, etc). While promises of a large bonus are enticing, just know there are often strings attached so you should be wary. With that said, I now prefer a larger guaranteed base, which I know will be paid regardless of external factors which I have little control over. Take the bigger base and build on that.
It also depends on your circumstances. I now have kids and a mortgage, so the bigger base is more important than needing to stress about if I’ll receive a bonus and how much it would be.
A bonus is always tempting, but it's vital to closely examine whatever the fine print happens to be. Remember, it's a bonus, and it's almost always the case that it's aligned to some performance metric, either for the firm or the individual. It may be difficult to assess whether those metrics will be surpassed and the bonus will be what's projected. At least with a base salary it's a tangible number and you know what you're getting before you agree to work there.
Good insight
i had a buddy that left public account for 150k plus 150k bonus. base was lower than what we was making. he ended up with 50% of the bonus the first year. he has done really well there so long term it's been great, but first year comp wasn't much of a bump because of that. it was due to his personal performance. So keep that in mind. Again a long term outlook prevailed here and he is killing it now!
Bonus is tempting, but there is no guarantee. I’m constantly seeing discussions about how abysmal the bonuses have been. Maybe in a few years it’ll be more realistic to choose a bonus over base, but I’d hesitate right now.
Agreed
Choose base over bonus, always
Very true..
A combo of both should be good. But like most I like base.
Agree base is most important as it’s guaranteed
