I hear ya. Recently considered upgrading my Allen Edmonds (~$330) to Feraggamos (~$800), but decided it wasn’t worth the difference in cost. See below.
All about preferences. Kia vs BMW. Huwaia vs Apple. Samsonite vs Tumi. Casio vs Omega. Aldo vs Allan Edmonds. Deloitte vs MBB.
I am 36, it is not about cash piling up for wants. Its about being able to justify $500 for a suitcase or $80 for an undershirt. Maybe I am just cheap. 😞
OP - I would never pay $80 for an undershirt - stupid
OP, with you on the undershirt, but most of us generally but things in two buckets: cheap and disposable or lasting quality. I'll spend $700 on a Briggs and Riley suitcase because I know it's the last suitcase I'll ever buy in my life. Once you have every need taken care of and all of your savings planned out, I see no reason why it's isn't perfectly appropriate to splurge a bit when things start to wear out.
You can prioritize, you know? I don't do coffee runs. I don't eat out as often as I would like when I'm home. I dtake public transportation.
It's just a question of what's important for you.
Imo it’s about finding the sweet spot for each item. For me, that’s around $300 for shoes. I’ve owned $50 target shoes and $600 feragamos. Personally, I’ve found the best value prop for me is around $300.
For watches, I like the $500 range. Maybe you like the 5k range. That’s fine. It’s also very useful for you to know. If a 5k omega seamaster is the watch you really want, then don’t buy 5+ $500 watches. Save up and buy 1 $5k Watch.
Lol! Don't think about it too much. It's very Great Gatsby-esque. I.e. Pretending to be rich by surrounding yourself with possessions.
Or you don’t need the Tumi bag or over the top watch 🤷♀️
True bespoke for $700-800?
Yeah P1, there you go. You are the one who makes me realize I don't make enough money everytime I come to this bowl.
You do. See LA1”s first post. It’s about value. Specifically value to you. Using the bespoke example, you can get two suits made every three years and then pick up a few well made jackets and slacks, and in a very short time you will have little need to buy anything else, assuming you stick with the classics and don’t do anything too fashion forward. The Zara-boys on these threads may look stylish to the young girls, but they’re doing it all wrong, in my opinion. Plus, it ain’t like these folks are buying $5000 watches every day, or at least I hope not. That’s the stuff you buy after all of the foundational stuff is locked down. Doing it before that is Gatsby-esque, as someone said. Quality first, price second, brand last. You make plenty enough and are smart enough to make good choices. Homework.
I get a giggle out of it if it is a wear item (suits/belts/shirts)
LA1 true. I splurge sometimes but I also try to think of ways I can make that money work like donating to charity instead of engaging in consumerism. 🤷♀️ not everything expensive is durable, so I think it’s coo if that’s the value you’re paying for. But some things are just a waste I think.
Well, I dont mind splurging reasonably on shoes (AE) and suits (true bespoke, costing about $700-800). For luggage, Tumi/B&R might last me 10 times more but then I tend to get bored using the same piece and hence prefer changing a $100-150 one every couple years.
I don’t know a single place where you can get true bespoke for $700-800. High end Italian Fabric mills like Loro Piana charge practically that much for just the fabric alone.
Yes D1. True bespoke means they cut. Lots of people claim bespoke when it’s really M-T-M. It is impossible to get true bespoke for that kind of money. Uneconomical. Unless it’s being done by your mom. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But making a suit is a craft mans business, and if they are any good, they are busy. Hard to make hourly rate x time math work for someone like that. Plus, Loro Piana. I’ve been going to my guy (former Saville Row) for years and I never spend less than 3 grand.
Yes P1 the Zara boys don’t look expensive or have executive presence 👨⚖️
Trust me, once you get to your late 20's (or early 30s if you have crippling private school debt) in this life and have everything you *need*, cash for the wants will start to pile up.
Some folks will always like brand names. It’s their money. I’d rather retire in style🤷♀️
