I mean school shootings are bad but the police get it wrong a lot of the time so I wouldn't want them near my kids with guns.
Districts need to have School Resource Officers in the schools. Even if they don't have a school shooting, they are available to deal with disruptive students and break up fights. I have friends who teach in Phoenix Union High School District who are nearly ready to leave because the amount of problems with student discipline has increased dramatically since the school board ended their contract with Phoenix PD. The school board has also overturned expulsions of students caught with weapons.
The school district should start speaking with private security companies. That might help with increasing safety. I know guns on campuses is a problem but there are plenty of parents that would be happy to get a guard card and stand at their kids school to help.
It’s more responsible than arming teachers. I’d be in favor of pushing beyond having individual officers present and standing up a police sub-station on the school campus.
'm glad that something is being done, but I feel like it would be more effective if schools just had security guards and a good security system
We often turn to police as a tool to solve a wide variety of policy issues. Police officers are present in schools to manage behavioral concerns. They aren't prepared or trained to deal with mass shooters. And, as we've seen in recent school shootings, when a school officer is there during a mass shooter, they may not be particularly successful.
As someone who went to high school here and had security guards, they were generally worthless and honestly the school was way too big for them to have done anything in the situation of a shooting. Additionally we already have a cop shortage here and I'd much prefer them deal with issues they're equipped to deal with. Let's pay teachers more and expand school counselor availability and stop cutting the arts, maybe then kids will have less angst.
