Those floor plans were product of its time. They were planned during a time when people used to visit each other unannounced often. People used to have those parlor/waiting/living room for guests when they walk in, so that guests never had to see rest of the messy house. People’s lifestyle changed a lot since then, and modern living style calls for grand library/ home office by the entrance for guests. And Kitchen was thought to be a utility space, rather than heart of the home.
Exactly.
Split lev homes are a royal pain, up and down stairs all the time. But I actually like having a formal living room and a separate family room. It is nice to have a space where the adults can relax, away from the children who should be allowed to be kids. Granted the living room does not need to be huge, but the separate space is a good thing.
In IL they usually do
Always wondered why split levels were so common in the 70’s and 80’s.
Weren’t they originally designed for homes being built on uneven terrain? Definitely not an issue here in Illinois.
Pro
Kitchens are messy utility spaces. They should be efficient and out of the way.
Couldn’t agree more. Formal living rooms/sittings room never get used so it’s a complete waste. First floors should be bigger kitchen, bigger family room, normal dining room, 1 bathroom, office if possible
Am looking in northern suburbs of IL and have seen move inventory over the past few months which is a silver lining
Can’t forget how nerve wracking kids are in them too. Tiny house, so many possibilities for injuries.
And constant stairs.
Split level is cool and vibey as hell, kitchens are small, but all kitchens at the time were.
Agree to disagree
I knew someone who bought a cheap run down split home and added an addition to the first level to have a big kitchen and dining area and it worked nicely!
