Why does every retail job in the UK now require you to fill out a forty minute online application before you even get a look in?
You spend ages re-typing your CV into their portal just to be met with a generic rejection email from a "no-reply" address. It feels like the old days of just handing in a paper copy and actually talking to a manager were much more efficient for everyone involved.

It seems the same way in America too! However, if you’re someone who can’t take the time out of their day to meet with managers in person (because you’re a single parent) or can be harder to go about it the old fashioned way.

The online portals are built for volume, not for people. It saves companies time up front but pushes all that time onto applicants. I get compliance and tracking requirements, but when you are retyping your whole CV just to get a no reply rejection, it feels like the process is filtering for patience more than talent.

It really does feel like the process got longer while the connection got shorter. Spending all that time re-entering the same details just to get an automated reply is draining. At least with paper applications you had a chance to speak to someone face to face. Now it can feel like you’re talking to a system instead of a person.

I’m currently struggling with my friend group. I’m a transplant to my current city and ended up making friends with my coworkers (who were also transplants). Now I’m regretting this as I don’t feel like the friendship is deep and things seem competitive. I feel like I have no friends and my real friends (from HS and College) are in a different state and have their own lives. Any advice on dealing with having no real friends where you live?
