Why is it so hard to set boundaries without being seen as “difficult”? I’ve finally started clocking out at 5, not checking my inbox at night, and politely declining extra work that isn’t in my role—and now I’m getting side-eyes in meetings and little comments like, “Must be nice to have such strict hours.” I’m not slacking—I’m just trying to protect my time and energy. But apparently, that makes me the problem. Is it really that radical to want a life outside of work?

In toxic workplaces, boundaries are treated like rebellion. The second you stop overextending yourself, they act like you’re a threat. You’re not difficult—they’re just addicted to your unpaid labor.

I’m right with you! However the powers that be frown on this. If things get more tense then it may be time to move to a less toxic organization.

People don't understand the freedom that boundaries give you. They are overtaken with work and don't see that it's just defining them when they can get out there and be there own person with a real life!

I would re-assert your boundaries and come up with an exit strategy asap...

I’ve suffered from workaholism for a long time. Thanks to a lot of great self help books and therapy, I’m no longer putting work on a pedestal and I’m spending a lot more time on self care and my marriage. But, unfortunately, I am now getting withdrawals, because my body is used to the daily adrenaline of throwing myself into work. It’s this terrible feeling of like anguish/unease in my gut, but I don’t have anything I’m worried about- it’s like my body wants to find something to worry about.

Ah! A recruiter emailed me saying they saw I applied for a role as a referred candidate, and they are “sharing my resume with the recruiter supporting this role for further review.” Is this a good sign? I’m surprised a recruiter reached out about my application who isn’t the recruiter for the job. Trying to moderate my hope if it’s not actually that promising?
