Most consultants earn enough that we should be able to save a LOT more than the average American towards retirement without taking a major lifestyle hit (though obviously some people have family commitments etc).
That being said, there’s a larger question about what you’ll do if you retire early - as humans we derive a huge amount of our purpose from work and a long retirement with no set objectives is probably terrible for your mental health.
TL;DR save enough to semi-retire and do a job you enjoy without taking a lifestyle hit imo
I’ve always had this in mind. I can’t see truly retiring and sitting in the beach for the rest of my life any at point. Having something productive to put your energy into is key for longevity and happiness. Finding something that is part time / low stress would be the goal, but having enough money that I could take a huge pay cut to do so.
Absolutely. I have no interest working until I drop dead. I don't save every penny by any means, but I'm still putting away a good amount so that I can actually enjoy retirement while I'm relatively young.
Balance is the key. Taking the saving too far shouldn’t be the goal but I think having a vision of early retirement helps make responsible choices even easier.
Yes I have thought about this many times to be honest with you. The older I get the more I think that early retirement is the goal.
There are seriously some days where I question if I can make it 5-10 more years. But others where I think I’d never want to leave.
I truly think it’s important to take advantage of the higher income while I can to save a lot, but still enjoy the road. I’d love to retire early and don’t mind delaying a year or two to spend money on trips and experiences, within reason, along the way.
