Happens all the time. Favoritism is a real thing unfortunately. It's really frustrating feeling like there are two separate sets of rules at work.

To add to this sometimes it's because one is a poor performer and one is actually good at their job which could change the reactions.

I’ve definitely seen that. The mistake isn’t always what decides the reaction. Sometimes it’s the person, their history, or how management views them. It can make the rules feel a bit inconsistent. Has anyone actually seen this handled in a fair way?
I have seen that for sure and I've even experienced it. But usually the stern warning comes after a pattern of behavior rather than a singular occurrence. When somebody keeps making the same mistake over and over again, the corrective action gets more intense.
