My goodness never ask about Salary, Holidays or days off in the first Interview!
Interviewers are looking for the right to hire for the opening! They want to hear things like:
What are you looking for in a candidate! And what are the key attributes required in this position?
If hired, who would be my direct report? How large is the staff and what is the reporting structure?
What is your biggest challenge that I can help you solve in the first 30 days?
May I ask, what is your timeline to fill? (This is how soon are they going to hire?)
Hope this helps!
If they can't explain what your responsibilities will be, negotiate salary, or explain how the work culture is in the first interview, you more than likely avoided a terrible job. They probably would've paid you too low, gave you too much work, and had terrible policies when it comes down to PTO, Sick Days, and Emergencies.
Always ask every question you can think of to try to avoid being stuck in a job that costs you your mental health and wellbeing.
I never ask about salary or that sort of thing when interviewing the first time. I want to know:
A. What is the strategic direction of the company and how is that communicated to employees. I can tell a lot about a company if there is no answer or a nebulous answer.
B. What issues is the company looking to solve? Based on the response, I can discuss how my specific skill set can solve or assist in solving the issue. I can also tell how I solved similar issues in the past, without spending their last dime.
C. Ask about things related to the position, point out that XYZ has been found to be an asset in developing abc.
D. Do your research on the company, if you're applying for sales, understand their customer base, and their competitors. Same for any other position, look outside the corporate website as well.
If nothing else, you will show you spent the time understanding the company and its business. That counts for a great deal since many people don't put in that effort.
