Hard to say. You're a content strategist. I think agencies are getting squeezed if you're on the agency side. And even in house at brands, the economy has not been great the past few years, so marketing and content budgets and headcount get slashed first before the finance and operations people do (someone has to make the stuff or do the service or there will be no story to tell/sell on the content/marketing side). And with AI coming in and making content production easier, those kinds of roles are less available and being cut. It may be the type of job you're doing. Marketing type jobs are just trending down going forward. It may be your industry(ies) are particularly hard hit and not spending on content or content strategy. Or, it could be that there is something about your work style that is having you be singled out over colleagues when layoffs are having to be done. That may require some honest conversations with people around you to see if that is a factor. Hang in there! It's tough, but you will get through this, even if it means pivoting to something else or working on your work style or interpersonal skills.
It's more likely your career path or industry. 4 layoffs is a lot in just 10 years. I've had a 20 year career in tech consulting / product management and haven't been laid off once. You really have to tie yourself to revenue generation and have a sponsor in upper management who knows your value. That's the only way you can survive in this economy.
Almost everyone goes through layoffs once in their career, I’d say don’t lose hope and take a moment to reflect and reassess if it’s the industry or wider economy or any area you need to work on.
Four layoffs in what must be about a decade or so is a lot. You might want to consider doing some kind of career pivot. The problem is that a lot of companies are obsessive about cutting costs, especially recently. And when they start looking for positions to eliminate it tends to be the creative people who wind up as targets. Pivoting from content strategy to something that seems a little more durable might be something to contemplate.
