When I worked in industry and we had complicated software contracts. We would sometimes hire outside counsel for technical concerns. They were from small firms we had on retainer. We valued them but software contracts don’t pay like a hedge fund contract.
I'm working in-house now, doing privacy work. I feel extremely valued and appreciated here. Being tech-savvy go a long way in helping me understand all the security and IT lingo. I'm also constantly pulled in to review software contracts, vendor agreements, and to help evaluate new services. I've also been put in charge of creating a new legal ticketing system at my company. I love every bit of it.
I entered law school after 10 years of working, most recently at a software company. I enjoyed the techy stuff but I came to school after deciding I wanted to be the person behind the software contracts. I am not in my 2nd year and I’ve been questioning how important it actually is to be tech savvy. Does it really matter when you’re not in patent law? Does it actually help with getting into software contracts? Or... should I go into an unrelated field, would having some sort of tech background help/hurt/do nothing?
