6 months ago I moved from financial services to consulting. I was an executive and came in as a direct admit partner. It has been a wild roller coaster so far. It’s such a new job, I often feel like I have no clue what I’m doing and learning a different industry from scratch at 41 and at a senior level. The feedback has been great so far but I honestly am just exhausted by the complex politics of the partnership, don’t have a good team, and often feel like I don’t know how to do my job. Normal?!

Consulting (esp in the large firms) is such a beast of an industry. Politics within teams, between teams, with clients. Org structure is there, but also not. It’s important to learn who the gatekeepers are and who holds real power in the org, and to align with them. Be as visible as possible especially for success related to your KPIs, client work, and for building the company/talent. No matter what anyone tells you to do, prioritize activities that support achieving your metrics. Nothing else matters if you’re failing to meet those in consulting. I’ve seen numerous MDs/Partners get laid off bc they didn’t understand that.

Take advantage of learning opportunities and meet everyone you can. For the latter, I’ve found it crucial to cultivate relationships at all levels of the org, from juniors to the top.

Last, always have an exit plan and path. Consulting is cutthroat and layoffs can come basically any time for all levels. Consulting can be exhausting and so rewarding. I love it, but it’s not for everyone.
