9 of 10 people I see have their chat status as invisible (during work hours). They are online. And they are active and also respond. I am just wondering why people in the workplace don’t use the status judiciously. If you’re online, why not just be green? The invisible status is such a thing of the past I feel like. It’s not like I am go to the next person if you’re invisible. Is there a reason why people set their status as invisible during work hours?

There is a paranoia that people are watching your status 24/7 to make sure you are active.

Right!

Because nobody respects it anyway.

Who cares.. ping people and they’ll respond when they can. 🤷‍♂️

People go to the washroom. They get up to eat, heat coffee, stretch their legs. Showing them as “idle” is not an accurate portrayal of their productivity. The green status is a micromanaging surveillance tool, so no wonder people stay invisible and get their work done

U didn’t, OP?

This is a very micro-managing professional services (big law, IB, consulting) comment / expectation…

Personally it’s because I put it as invisible when I work outside of my working hours (aka like 10pm lol) and don’t want to be messaged, but then forget to change it back to automatic

I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?

My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at
Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.

L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Currently scheduling “on sites” for a S&O role in CA. My referrer said they can hire as L5 or L6. Would like to land in the L6 bucket as I’ve heard 5 --> 6 is one of the more challenging promotions.

I’m looking for info on what the real difference is in responsibilities (manager vs IC, cross functional vs focused, etc) so I can focus on checking the L6 boxes during my interviews.

I’m also curious about whether this is something that I should just discuss with my recruiter directly?

GCA Questions Help

Hi everyone!
I've had 2 rounds of interviews at Google (UK) for a non-tech role in Platforms & Ecosystems (L4/L5). Recruiter told me that I've been selected for the final rounds (GCA + Leadership Interview). From his feedback, one thing they wanted me to improve on was the GCA Questions. Would anyone have any tips on how to prepare for these? I've checked some of Jeff Sipe videos online but would appreciate any support! I find GCA quite stressful...
Thx
Thanks in advance!
