Because it’s an industry that rewards con artists and charlatans. They’re the ones who rise and exploit the people who possess the actual talent and skills.
Been freelancing at WK PDX for a year now and I’ve NEVER experienced a more transparent agency in my 25 year career. They have bi-monthly all agency Zoom meetings. So there’s 1.
Could you put my name in?
Even the most simple feedback is a big secret. No one cares about your development.
Of course they don’t! People only act with their own best interests in mind. I’m not saying that to be nasty, but it’s important to know. No one has your back.
I've been in the industry for 15 years and have had this same thought since day 1. It's wild that every agency has this same problem, in my experience.
Because they want to exploit you and lowball you and crush your dreams, all without you knowing.
Isn’t this a Corporate America problem in general? Keep status quo and be quiet and keep making money for the company.
Counter point to all the cynicism here:
I’ve been in agencies that tried to be hyper-transparent and it really didn’t go well. The truth is that the combination of employee cynicism, habitual breaking of confidence, and a tendency for juniors to misconstrue and make up narratives made it more headaches than it was worth.
Turns out transparency only works with mature and experienced staff. That’s why there’s a waterfall approach to disseminating information.
TLDR: because agency leaders have seen over sharing blow back on good-willed transparency and they just don’t have time to babysit staff who can’t handle/process the information.
Ogilvy1: sorry, I may not be tracking in your point. I’m telling you I’ve seen genuine attempts to be transparent fail due to the behaviours of junior staff. “Doesn’t make it any better” seems like a lazy response/dismissal. What would you advise leaders do differently?
Rising Star
Because if we knew how much money they made, we'd all ask for raises.
It’s right there in the published accounts. The bit they don’t tell you is that most agencies aren’t actually very profitable, and can struggle on cash flow if clients aren’t paying on time. So the bit they may not be being fully transparent on is how precarious the whole business/ business model is.
Transparent about what specifically?
I was wondering this, too.
Because imposters isn’t just a syndrome…
Lawsuit. Duh!
It’s just not really in their interest to be transparent, sadly. ‘They muddy the water to make it seem deep’
What would you like more transparency on specifically? Salaries? Business results? Performance?
Because they don’t want to reveal how they’re exploiting their workers.
Employer and employees relationship is one of power unbalance and exploitation, no matter how much we want to dress it up. So companies naturally push agains anything that could level the playing field
^ listen to our comrade
Because transparency means HONESTY and LOYALTY, and a company can’t be loyal to people they claim to value but are really just exploiting
Lmao so true
LOL i'm glad it's like this at other agencies too...always think it's just us
