A candidate asked about pay progression and was told, “We do not really discuss that.” Later, we wondered why retention was poor. Silence creates more problems than transparency. What conversations do you think workplaces avoid that they should not?

Whenever it looks like you're trying to bury information it will work against you. Employees will lose trust. Two areas where that really becomes an issue is being too opaque about pay and how promotions are determined. If there are retention issues, it's good to get in front of it with some creative questioning. Ask people what would make them take calls from recruiters and pay attention to the responses.

I think workplaces need to talk more about how to handle conflict resolution with your supervisor. We have lost employees because people are afraid to come to human resources if their manager is doing something that makes them upset or frustrated.

Hello all, I'm a very green attorney, never tried a single case or even was second or third chair, but managed to land a litigation associate position at a Plaintiff's firm. Does anyone remember their first trial? How did you feel and how did it turn out by comparison? Anything you wish you did differently?
I know in THEORY what the process of trials are but thanks to COVID I haven't been able to observe them in real life so I'm very nervous for the day I finally enter a courtroom.
