It’s classic age bias wrapped in a “harmless” comment. The truth? If you can do the work, your age is irrelevant. Travel wears everyone down—the 28-year-old junior consultant is just as wrecked after four flights in a week.
This could also be indicative of their own internal dialog or presumptions about aging.
I'll give you an example: I am a life-long gym-goer, and I went through a period in my late 30s, early 40s, where I was convinced that my mind, body, and performance was about to fall off a cliff. It got to a point that I started being able to lift less weight over time as proof that I was just "getting old." More and more, the challenges of getting older came up in conversation, and I became hyper-aware of how old my parents had become. It's the age-old adage about finding whatever you look for.
At some point, I got reignited by the fact that our now 8 year old is only getting more active, and decided to give it my all again. I cleaned up my diet and started giving 100% effort in the gym again, and look and behold, I am as lean and as strong at 48 as I've ever been, just now with a little grey hair and some joint pain. Getting weaker was entirely the result of what my mind was telling me "should" be happening.
Or maybe your client is just an ageist jerk.
How do you look though? Are you full of energy and vitality, or is it catching up?
Getting annoyed by things like this is often caused by someone scratching at the truth.
They may have wondered if you'd be open to a full time role with them?
They may be genuinely interested. My client asked the same question as I was traveling 60% and constantly missing key children milestones. They acknowledge I’m not 26 and single but 40 with 2 young kids so curious how I handle it.
