Provide a range where the low end is what you'd settle for or just above what you'd settle for.
I straight up say my range because they ask for a number… wondering what others do 😬
Do some research.
Find a reasonable amount.
Consider if you would be satisfied with it. If not, adjust.
If you're feeling lucky, add 10% b/c you won't get a reasonable raise on your first year since they're paying premium to get you in.
Finally, add about 10% for room to negotiate so you don't fall short of desired amount.
I provide a large range ($20,000-$40,000 range) and then ask how it compares against the range for the role. Then, I ask about the compensation structure for the role. This worked pretty well at LinkedIn recently. The recruiter told me the base salary range, bonus percentage, and typical equity package.
25% above my TC generally.
