Very likely not, and this is why recruiters tend to keep the identity of the firm a secret until you've basically already applied to a firm through them.
No. They need your explicit authorization. There’s ethics for these recruiters they’re not required to follow but it’s a good resource: https://nalsc.org/about/ and https://attorneyatlawmagazine.com/practice-management/recruiting/guide-eliminate-unethical-legal-recruiting. I avoid external recruiters. I ask them explicitly if the role is publicly posted, the firm’s name, their placement fee (b/c it affects how I negotiate), and whether this is their exclusive arrangement (no other third party recruiters in the mix). No phone calls. If they’re unable to provide clear disclosures, away the go. There’s absolutely no value they’re brining to the table except for misrepresenting their actual engagement with the hiring firm. They find these publicly posted roles online and misrepresent them as “their engagement” or “I’m working on this role for our client.” In fact, internal recruiters may not even be familiar with them or may not even have a valid placement fee agreement with them. I’d apply directly unless they can explain what specific value / exclusivity they’re bringing to the table beyond grabbing a publicly posted opportunity.
I would say this really depends on the recruiter. If they have been doing it long enough, they have intel on all the firms. Specifically, they know which firms other attorneys have left and why. The girl I worked with for my current job was awesome. I would’ve never bothered to apply if she hadn’t told me about the firm culture, bonus structure etc. She even told me to apply to some firms on my own, if they didnt have an agreement in place. The good ones will be fully transparent. Just do your due diligence. Ask how many attorneys they have placed at each firm, specifically who they work with, etc. The girl I chose had over 10 years of experience and knew the firms inside and out.
No. Merely sending you a lead is not a relevant action
